Senior Medical Laboratory Technician

Personal Skills and Qualities Leadership Skills: 1) I have been in the senior position which leads the testing operation in the department with the biggest workload in the hospital laboratory. Being the Senior Medical Technician in Biochemistry, my main responsibility is to oversee and monitor the junior technicians and lab assistants to ensure they complete their daily tasks. In doing so, I literally have to be on-site to work alongside them in ensuring that the standard operating procedures are being followed, and correct techniques are being used. 2) I was elected President of the Clinical Lab Social Committee from January 2018 to January 2022. This role required me to chair our monthly social committee meetings in which our staff social activities are discussed and fundraising ideas are initiated. Part of the role has helped me to become more confident in public speaking as I had to be the one to greet and farewell in formal speech our visiting consultants to the laboratory. 3) I was elected School Prefect of Avele College which consisted of more than 300 students. This role requires us to carry out orders, enforce rules and encourage disciplinary action for the school. This helped to develop my capacity building and significantly made me as a leader and an influential public speaker.

Doctors
Dr Helena Va’a-Fuimaono – Skin diseases/General Practice

“I developed an interest in Medicine from a young age and was drawn to Dermatology particularly because I grew up with bad eczema as a child,” Dr Va’a-Fuimaono told Pacific Dermatology. “The need for dermatology specialisation is obvious in our country as we have many common skin conditions that most of our local doctors are not able to diagnose or treat adequately.”
